How to Purchase Prints & Gifts

All orders, with the exception of calendars and digital downloads, are processed by our fulfillment partner - SmugMug. As a leading provider of photo sharing websites, SmugMug handles the secure online order processing and customer service for SteamPhotos.com. Prints are produced and shipped directly from EZ Prints, a professional photo lab in Georgia (USA). I donate 20% of all SteamPhotos.com sales to non-profit organizations dedicated to the preservation of steam railroading, including both historical societies and operating entities.

To order a print or other product, please follow the steps below. Please note that any combination of photos and gifts may be combined in a single order.

1. Find a Photo
   • Select a category (railroad or event) from the SteamPhotos.com Home Page.
   • Browse the category using the page or photo navigation buttons at the top.
   • Click a thumbnail photo on the left and a larger version of the photo will appear on the right.
2. Select Prints & Merchandise
   • Click the "buy this photo" link from the top-right of your screen. A pop-up window will appear after a moment.
   • To order one or more prints or mounted canvas prints of the selected photo, adjust the quantity of the desired product using the quantity column.
   • To order postcards, apparel and gifts, select the Merchandise tab at the top of the window, then adjust quantity. As you modify quantities, your order total will be updated at the bottom of the window.
   • Click the "Back to Photos" button in the bottom-left. You may now repeat the steps above to add other photos to your order.
3. Checkout
   • Click the "view cart" link from the top-right of your screen.
   • All selected photos will appear in your SmugMug shopping cart. You may change product or quantity using the designated fields, and then apply changes by clicking the "Update" button at the bottom.
   • If your selected print size does not exactly match the proportions of a photo, you'll see a red box that indicates the cropped portion of the photo that will be printed.
   • To adjust the cropping, click the red 'adjust' button, then click and drag the blue box to the desired location. If you cannot find a desired crop, you may instead adjust the print size to a different proportion (i.e. 8x12" instead of 8x10").
   • Finally, choose the "Next >>" icon at the bottom of the shopping cart to enter shipping and payment details.
   • You will have an opportunity to review applicable sales tax (California residents only) and shipping rates before confirming your order.
     

Digital Downloads

Some photos are also available for digital download, allowing use of a photo for websites, advertising, books, custom prints, and other personal and commercial purposes. Most photos are available at resolutions up to eight megapixels and can be delivered online (e-mail or FTP) or by mail (CD or DVD). Please e-mail me with the desired photos and intended use and I'll respond promptly with pricing and availability.

Calendars

Calendars are spiral-bound, measure 11"x8.5" closed (11"x17" open), captioned, and professionally printed. The 2008 calendar features 13 scenic photos of steam railroads throughout North America and is available by clicking here. The 2009 calendar will be available in October.

Framed and Mounted Prints

Most photos are available for purchase on heavy duty PremierArt Water Resistant Canvas, finished with a Giclee Satin Matte Clear Coat for UV and water resistance. The canvas is stretched and then wrapped over a wooden frame, so the photo covers the sides of the frame for a beautiful presentation. Mounted canvas prints are available in sizes ranging from 11x14" to 24x36" dependent on the resolution and proportions of a photo.

Due to the wide variety of frames and high shipping costs, SteamPhotos.com does not offer frames with traditional glossy, matte, and lustre prints. With print sizes ranging from 4x6" to 24x36", there's a print size for nearly any desired frame.

Print Sizes & Cropping

SteamPhotos.com offers prints ranging in size from 4x6" to 24x36". The print sizes range in proportions from 2:3 (i.e. 8x12" print) to 4:5 (i.e. 8x10" print). You're welcome to choose from any available size, but may need to use the cropping tool during checkout if the the print proportions do not match the original photo. If you have any difficulty obtaining the desired print size for a photo, please contact me for assistance.

True Color vs. Auto Color

When a product is added to the shopping cart, there are two options for color selection. True Color (the default selection) is recommended as it maintains the individual color optimization applied to all photos at SteamPhotos.com. Auto Color uses a automated color optimization technique at the photo lab and may undesirably shift colors and tones.
