Abandoned Railroad Tunnels of the Eastern US
Photos from 2006 and 2007 of Sand Patch Tunnel (PA), Manunka Chunk Tunnel (NJ), and Oxford Tunnel (NJ).
A present day view of the abandoned 975 foot long Manunka Chunk tunnel, built in the 1850s. The tunnel was always prone to flooding, despite the railroad's attempt to divert a nearby creek by wooden flume. The Lackawanna Cut-Off opened in 1911, spelling the end to most freight and passenger service on the original mainline. Track was removed from the tunnel in 1942 but a small section remains today, trapped between two cave-ins of the westbound bore.
