Coal & Iron Tunnel #2 (Glady, West Virginia)
Coal & Iron Railway Tunnel #2 (1902-1985)
Glady, West Virginia
The Coal & Iron Railway was completed in 1903 between Elkins and Durbin, West Virginia. The route required tunnels through Cheat Mountain (Tunnel #1 - 1,800 feet) and Shavers Mountain (Tunnel # 2 - 1,000 feet).
The C&I was acquired by the Western Maryland Railroad in 1905. The Durbin Subdivision (including Tunnel #2) was later abandoned by CSX in 1985, while the Tygart Subdivision (including Tunnel #1) was acquired by the West Virginia Central Railroad in 1997.
Today, the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad operates tourist service between Elkins, Cheat Bridge, and Spruce. The railroad has long-range plans of restoring track between Cass, Durbin, and Elk River Junction, which would require the reopening of Tunnel #2.
