Haskell Pass Tunnel (Kalispell, MT)
Haskell Pass Tunnel (1892-1902)
near Kalispell, Montana
Modern day views inside the 1400-foot (approx.) Haskell Pass Tunnel near Kalispell, Montana, built by the Great Northern Railway in 1892. The tunnel was abandoned in 1902 after just 10 years of use when the Great Northern relocated their grade to the north. Now abandoned for over 100 years, the east portal is entirely collapsed, while the west portal remains accessible but unstable. Inside, the wooden arches remain in surprisingly good condition and there are no significant collapses for the first several hundred feet. Unfortunately, swarming mosquitoes both outside and in made it undesirable to stop for many long-exposure photos.
