In July 2009, SP Daylight 4-8-4 #4449 (Lima built 1941) led a cross-country excursion to TrainFestival 2009, a celebration of railroad history in Michigan. This gallery features photos from each day of the trip east, including the Columbia River Gorge, Glacier National Park, the Great Plains, and more. After appearing at the festival, 4449 made its way to Minneapolis for autumn excursions down the Mississippi, followed by a westbound return trip to Portland in October. Photos from the return trip are posted in the SP Daylight 4449 Westbound Gallery. The Daylight was restored in 1975 to lead the American Freedom Train, a 21-month bicentennial celebration tour of all 48 contiguous states. For more info, visit 4449.com.
