Sumpter Valley Railroad (Oregon)
Sumpter Valley Railroad - McEwen, Oregon
Photos from February 2014 and October 2018 featuring Sumpter Valley 2-8-2 #19 (Alco built 1920) and W.H. Eccles Lumber #3 (Heisler 1915). The original Sumpter Valley Railway began in Baker City in 1890 to serve the area's growing logging industry. The railroad stretched 80 miles at its peak, reaching the gold boom town of Sumpter and cattle country around Prairie City. In 1971, just 24 years after the original railroad's abandonment, volunteers began an effort that would restore two of the line's original steam locomotives plus the five miles of narrow gauge right-of-way between McEwen and Sumpter that continue in operation today.
